My research topic is The Recovery of Fredericksburg after the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Civil War. I looked up “Recovery from the Battle of Fredericksburg”. And this entire got me some information such as, there were 18,500 estimated casualties. 12,500 Union soldier casualties as well as 6,000 Confederate soldier casualties all in just the Battle of Fredericksburg. I also got information such as, After the engagement, the Federals give up their victories and bridge the Rappahannock to avoid being surrounded. Recriminations in Washington are sparked by the humiliating and crushing Union defeat, which leads to a crisis among Lincoln’s cabinet members, which the president skillfully resolves. Six weeks after the battle, Lincoln removes Burnside from command and appoints General Joseph Hooker commander of the Army of the Potomac. Following the Civil War, Fredericksburg’s economy started to flourish and be influenced by industry, technology, transportation, and cities. Reconstruction. The populations, companies, and factories in Virginia’s cities all increased. Railroads played a crucial role in the development of commerce, agriculture, and industry. The last term I looked up was just “Fredericksburg after the Civil War”. I got information such as there were Millions of Freed slaves including in Fredericksburg. There were also new Amendments and Acts that effected the city and how it would recover. As well as information such as the abolition of slavery in the 13th Amendment, the granting of equal citizenship in the 14th Amendment, and the granting of voting rights in the 15th Amendment, to former slaves all within a five year period were the most drastic and quick social and political changes in American history. These entries can help me think about my topic in many different ways and find different types of details throughout the recovery and reconstruction after the Civil War. I can dig deeper in different angles of research whether it is looking at how Fredericksburg socially recovered after the Civil War or physically recovered. I can also dig deeper into how the new amendments specifically effected Fredericksburg and the overall recovery of the city since there were a big amount of new free people that were slaves that need places to live and work. I think this topic has many different details to dive into and learn more about, especially considering I searched just a few terms and already found all of the above information.
