I have visited many historic sites in Virginia Beach which is where I am from as well as a few others in different areas. But my favorite visit of all was Colonial Williamsburg. This was a visit for a school field trip and we got to see and learn so much about how the colony once was. My classmates and I were given a tour guide who took us around the whole entire place. We got to go inside some historic buildings and try to do things the way they used to. I learned about the lifestyle of the colonists and being there really put into perspective how different it used to be. I also learned things such as the fact that Williamsburg was founded as the capital of the Virginia Colony in 1699 as well as that its name is derived from the England’s reigning monarch, King William III. Williamsburg was one of the first planned cities in America and was to be a new and well ordered city. I enjoyed seeing how each and every colonists worked hard to get what they needed, nowadays we just get whatever we want with technology. Most labor in the colonies was manual labor and I feel that made people more disciplined and independent faster. I appreciated seeing how the colonies set the course for us and created a basis for living and eventually led to opportunities of expansion not just with land but technology as well. I enjoyed how the guides put us through little challenges and games that simulated some of the work the colonists would do. We also played a few games that were played in the colonies. I also enjoyed being with my friends as it was a field trip. Usually if I were with friends I wouldn’t pay to much attention and I would probably mess around but on this visit I was completely focused on our tour guide and I just found all the houses and shops and churches so fascinating. It was crazy walking through the town feeling like I was really living there and doing everyday things the colonists once did. I believe publicly accessible historical sites are significant because they are straight from the past and how things used to be. People learn so much from them and some sites are so surreal to see. Public sites can also make people grateful for what we have today and grateful for the foundation the history set for us. My visit to Colonial Williamsburg was amazing and I definitely won’t forget how it opened my eyes to so much of our areas history.
