I believe it is very important to consider Native American history and how they viewed the history of Fredericksburg. They went through a much different process than the settlers did which led to a much different perspective on the history. All of the tours and many other ways you can learn about sites tell us about the views of the settlers and don’t consider the views of the people who were here first. The settlers views were based on how they were doing a good thing and finding freedom by moving to America and claiming land to build on. And this is the basis you will hear when listening and reading about the history of settlers. But not many times do you hear about how from the Natives Americans perspective the settlers were invading and taking over all of their home land. The settlers views and stories have been passed down by family and friends. This led to their views being talked about and how they sounded so innocent and brave. Which is why this has been passed down and now these are the stories and information told when going on these historic tours or looking it up online. I feel like this is the same way when talking about historic markers as well. These markers are made to recognize what had happened from the English perspective and mark the importance of it. I do think the historic markers that are left untouched and straight from those times may have stories of the Native Americans or more a side of their perspective. I think different perspectives on history is important for scholars and audiences because you want to be able to answer every question about any side of the story. There is always two sides to the story and if you only know one then there is so much you are missing from the topic. I also think its important because before you hop on one side and agree with that, you should hear out the other side and find out what you are most passionate about in that topic. For me, I would believe that the settlers were courageous and great people if I hadn’t heard how they affected the Natives as well as how they treated them. I think in any historic topic it is good to learn about each and every perspective because you never know what really happened until you understand each perspective and that will give you the most information about how things really developed.
